In her first exhibition with the gallery, Clare Koury presents Scaling Laws For An Open EnTrainment Structure.
Koury has transformed the gallery into a resonant cavity tuned to the Schumann Resonance, a natural electromagnetic frequency produced by lightning strikes and sustained between Earth’s surface and upper atmosphere. Averaging around 7.83 Hertz and colloquially known as the earth’s “heartbeat,” the phenomenon is well-established within atmospheric and geological scientific literature and its impact on human physiology remains an active site of interdisciplinary research and speculation.
In Koury’s installation, copper pipes serve as natural conduits for this ultra-low resonance, channeling the frequency through an inherently conductive network inspired by both ancient pre-Christian labyrinths and modern hydronic radiant heating systems. Copper’s ability to transfer energy sustains the resonance as it moves through the labyrinthine form, fostering a dynamic interaction between the physical and energetic realms within the space.
ARTIST STATEMENT
The human ear detects 0.002% of all vibrational phenomena as audible sound. The human eye detects 0.0035% of all incoming radiation as visible light. You and I know there’s plenty more where that came from. Our cells respond accordingly.
What humbly constitutes the bulk of experience lacks the apparent solidity of objects that motivates us to name them. But it is present and detectable across a range of spectra beyond the scope of our native lens.
The remaining 99.9965% of all electromagnetic radiation bypasses your vision but moves through your body at all times, interacting with cellular tissues and exerting varying degrees of oscillating influence.
Radio waves from the sun pass through us constantly and are harmless enough at lower frequencies. The high-intensity radio waves of more powerful telecommunication systems cause the molecules in our bodies to oscillate, which generates heat and raises the temperature of our internal biological tissues causing them to break down more rapidly.
Entropy is heat in motion.
You’re a perceptive sensor.
You can increase the range of perceptible phenomena through expanding the aperture of your attention. Meditation is long exposure which comes to its fullest definition through the stillness of the open lens of perception.
Survival depends on sensitivity to stimuli.
You can be as sensitive as you want.
Figured it out yet?

CLARE KOURY (Kentucky, 1993) is an artist, educator and writer whose research explores natural phenomena, material transformation, and the construction of history. She received a Masters of Arts from Columbia University, and a Bachelors Degree from University of Chicago. Her approach draws from a wide range of interdisciplinary sources, blending material inquiry with metaphysical exploration, to better understand the invisible forces that influence human behavior. Her work endeavors to illuminate universal patterns—magnetic, solar, and sonic forces that bind the cosmos and life on Earth.
Currently based in New York City, she teaches at UConn and has exhibited at institutions including Snow Gallery, The Emily Harvey Foundation, Randy Alexander Gallery, the Fall River Museum of Contemporary Art, Canary Test, The Jewish Museum and Produce Model. She was the 2021 Windgate fellow and resident at Josephine Sculpture Park in Frankfort, Kentucky and is the recipient of the Windgate Fellowship at Purchase College for Spring 2025.
